DROUGHT TOLERANT LANDSCAPING
Our focus at Eco Landscape is drought tolerant landscape design and drought resistant landscaping that are appropriate for the Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley climate. Many people mistake drought tolerant plants for “desert” plants - this is not true! Although we do love working with agaves, yuccas, aloes and succulents for their architectural look and low maintenance qualities, there is a long list of lush, green and flowering plants that are drought tolerant, thrive in Southern California and that are incorporated into the gardens we create. When selecting the plant palette for each garden, we look carefully at the amount of sun, shade, and the soil type your property has, to determine which low water plants will grow best and have a long life in your landscape. By focusing on drought tolerant landscaping, we contribute to water conservation efforts while providing our clients with beautiful, low maintenance and sustainable gardens that they can enjoy for years to come.
DROUGHT TOLERANT GARDENS FAQ
1. What is drought tolerant landscaping?
Drought tolerant landscapes require less water because the plants that are used are low water plants. Designing a drought tolerant landscape helps conserve water, reduce maintenance, and creates eco-friendly environments, especially in areas prone to water scarcity like Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.
2. Can drought tolerant landscaping still be green, lush and flowering?
Yes! Many people associate drought tolerant plants only with native California plants. There are many other drought tolerant plants that are full, lush and have beautiful textures. There are also many that have flowers that are commonly used throughout the gardens we design and install.
3. My garden areas are shady. Are there drought tolerant plants that grow in the shade?
There is a large range of drought tolerant plants that will thrive in the shade, and some that even grow in both the sun and the shade. During the design phase we will work with you to select the right plants for each garden area. Also considered are the type of soil you have as well as the trees that are growing within the garden areas.
4. Can I use spray irrigation in my garden areas?
No! Spray irrigation is not usually appropriate for drought tolerant gardens. We use the highest quality drip irrigation in all of our garden areas to allow the watering to happen “underground” and to allow the plants to get a slow even soak on the days you water.
